How to Properly Wash and Maintain Your Wool Sauna Hat

A premium natural wool felt sauna hat is naturally antimicrobial and odor-resistant due to the lanolin present in sheep's wool. Because of this, it does not require washing after every single session.

However, regular sweat exposure and mineral build-up mean you should periodically refresh your hat. Because heat and agitation cause wool fibers to shrink and felt further, follow these steps to keep your cap in optimal shape.

Day-to-Day Routine: After Every Session

You rarely need full immersion washing after a regular sauna run:

  • Never leave it crumpled in a gym bag: Trapped moisture invites mildew and distorts the hat's structure.

  • Hang to dry immediately: Use the hanging loop to suspend the hat in an open, well-ventilated space at room temperature.

  • Avoid direct heat sources: Do not place the hat directly on radiators, heating vents, or inside a tumble dryer, as extreme direct heat shrinks wet wool.

Step-by-Step Deep Cleaning Guide

When your hat needs a thorough wash (typically every 10–15 sessions or if it picks up odors):

  • Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water: Keep the water under 30°C. Hot water causes wool fibers to tighten and shrink.

  • Add a mild wool detergent: Use a drop of specialized wool wash or a gentle, pH-neutral soap. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners.

  • Submerge and soak: Place the hat in the water and gently press it down. Let it soak for 5 to 10 minutes. Do not wring, scrub vigorously, or twist the material.

  • Rinse with cool water: Drain the soapy water and gently rinse the hat with clean, cool water until the suds are gone.

  • Press out excess water: Sandwich the hat between two clean, dry towels and press down firmly to remove excess moisture. Never wring or twist wool felt.

  • Reshape and air dry: Place your fist inside the crown to restore its original bell or cone shape, smooth down the brim, and set it flat on a drying rack away from sunlight.
